After 127 years of service, the Mornington Presbyterian Church in Dunedin will be decommissioned at a special service on Sunday.

The 70 parishioners who regularly attend the church will relocate to the redeveloped Mornington Community Centre in Maryhill Tce, from Christmas Eve.

"[Sunday] will be a sad day, particularly for those who have had a long association with the church, those who have been baptised here, married here or grieved [for] a loved one here," the Rev Geoffrey Skilton said.

The church opened on the Glenpark Ave site on March 27, 1881, with a new building later required as the congregation outgrew the original, a far cry from today's declining numbers, he said.

"Like other churches, numbers have been on the down side, so it made sense for the congregation to relocate to a new site."

In 1997, the congregation voted for the parish to worship in one place, in Maryhill Tce, requiring the Kenmure and Mornington churches to be sold in 2003 and 2005 respectively.

The parish had leased the church until the end of the year, when it would be converted into a private residence.

The new centre would officially open on February 14 and 15.

The $2 million facility would serve the needs of the community and congregation for years to come, he said.

"This old site served us well for worship, but not as a community centre. This new development bodes well for the future."

The decommissioning service would be held on Sunday from 10am and anybody was welcome to attend, he said.
