More than $8.5 million was awarded to community projects in Otago over the past year and one of the largest grants was dedicated to keeping people warm.

The Otago Community Trust released its annual grant list recently, detailing which groups had received money between April last year and March this year.

The trust delivered over $8.5 million across 395 groups.

The Cosy Homes Charitable Trust, receiving $250,000, was one of the groups gaining the highest grants.

Cosy Homes executive officer Jeremy Baker said the money went towards keeping Otago homes warm and dry.

Cosy Homes provided heating and insulation grants to homeowners who lived in their home and met the criteria for funding.

The Government’s Warmer Kiwi Homes programme made up 80% of the heating and insulation grants.

The money received from the Otago Community Trust helped Cosy Homes make up the remaining 20%.

More than 600 insulation and heating grants were offered to Otago homeowners last year, he said.

On the other end of the spectrum is Concord School, which received a grant of $110.

School principal Steve Turnbull said the grant went towards covering the cost of school camps for families who struggled to afford it.

The school received money for camps annually, but it was never higher than $1000.

The money was going straight back to the children and helped pupils from feeling left out, he said.
