An independent commissioner has given the go-ahead for a restaurant to build a deck beside the historic Dunedin Railway Station.
Commissioner Gary Rae released his decision this morning, which ruled the project could proceed.
The Dunedin City Council received more than 60 public submissions on Cobb & Co Dunedin's plans for a 150sqm deck on public land at the northern end of the railway station.
Three-quarters opposed the plan.
A hearing on the issue last week followed confirmation late last year a group of Dunedin businesspeople had signed a lease with the Dunedin City Council to progress the restaurant development.
The deck had already been granted resource and building consent, but required a public hearing as the deck would occupy public land.
In his decision Mr Rae said the area where the deck would be built had "at best only occasional use'', and the project would encourage greater use of the space.

What is the point of asking for submissions on a consent application if they are going to be ignored? A waste of time for people who make the effort and a cynical pretence at democracy.
This must be stopped. One man does not have the right to make this decision when the majority oppose this. ,
For a city that prides itself on our history and architecture this is simply WRONG.
