Sub-lieutenant Aaron Thompson (left) accepts command from Lieutenant-commander Grant Edie, of the Waireka Sea Cadets Corps, at TS Waireka, in Dunedin, yesterday.
Lt-cmdr Edie (52) said he was stepping down after 40 years as unit commander because he was working in Auckland about 75% of the year.
''It wouldn't be fair to be commander of the unit when I couldn't be here, so it's time to hand over.''
Sub-lt Thompson (26) said he was prepared for the ''challenging'' role and would continue his work with the Mosgiel Volunteer Fire Brigade.
About 70 people attended the handover in Kitchener St.
