Pupils at Columba College have always known their commerce teacher is an enterprising woman, but soon Suzanne Bishop will have an accolade to prove it.

The Columba head of commerce will receive the 2009 Sir James Fletcher Award for her outstanding contribution to enterprise at the national finals of the Young Enterprise Scheme presentation dinner on November 4.

The award was for the top enterprise teacher in New Zealand, she said.

"It's a pretty cool award, I have to say. I'm so thrilled that I've got this award."

Mrs Bishop has been teaching economics and enterprise for 20 years - 18 of them at Columba College.

During that time, she has had many successes with her Young Enterprise Scheme pupils, but until now she believed 2001 had been a highlight.

She and her husband Ken, a geography teacher at Kings High School, created a combined young enterprise team made up of pupils from both schools.

The team created playing cards with popular Otago landmarks on them which won the 2001 Fletcher Challenge Company of the Year Award for the best young enterprise team in New Zealand.

"That was a real highlight. Until now, I didn't think it would get any better than that."

While she was excited about the award, her attention was squarely focused on her young enterprise team - Lucrative - which was recently second in the marketing plan category and first in the best financial performance category at the Otago Regional Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme Awards.

She will travel with the pupils to the national final in Wellington in the hope they, too, will receive a national award.
