Collection service cost decision put on hold

Decision-making about how Dunedin residents should pay for a revamped rubbish and recycling kerbside collection service next year has been put off.

Elected officials were to debate yesterday whether residents should be charged a flat fee, a progressive targeted rate calculated on property value or a mixture of the two approaches.

However, the upgraded service is not due to start until July 2023 and the three-yearly revaluation of properties is to happen before the end of this year.

That prompted Cr Mike Lord to suggest decision-making about the approach to charging ratepayers for the upgraded kerbside collection service should be postponed.

Dunedin Mayor Aaron Hawkins and the rest of the council agreed.

The new system will result in households putting waste in bins, rather than bags, for collection at the kerb and separate bins will be provided for food scraps.

Residents will also have the option of paying extra for kerbside collection of garden waste.

The existing kerbside recycling service is funded by a flat targeted rate of $106.10 a year.

Households buy council rubbish bags on top of that, unless they use a private bin provider.

A flat rate for the new service could cost between $270 and $310 and adding a bin for garden waste could cost between $140 and $180 more.
