The Dunedin City Council is keeping "a close watch" on sand at city beaches, following winter storms in the last two months.
Council community and recreation services manager Mick Reece said yesterday the sand profile was low at St Clair "after a couple of months of occasional winter storms".
The nearly 4km of coastline from St Clair to Lawyers Head has 98ha of heavily modified sand dunes, and since huge storms ripped into the sandhills in 2007, the council has been working to develop a plan to deal with the issue.
Among other works, sand was taken from the Otago Harbour and dumped near Middle Beach to help shore up the dunes, and Reno mattresses, steel mesh cages filled with rocks, were placed at the foot of the dunes.
A report with recommendations is expected this month.
Mr Reece said some rubble had been exposed, and the council was keeping a close watch, in case the next storm required contractors to bring in sand.
"At the moment, that isn't necessary," he said.
