Dunedin's Municipal Chambers clock will be stopped for more than a week later this year to be dismantled and thoroughly cleaned, Dunedin City Council staff say.
The plan was confirmed yesterday by council staff, following a meeting with contractors Octa Associates Ltd and clock caretaker Jeff Martin on Wednesday.
The meeting came after Mr Martin raised concerns about dust stirred up by refurbishment work inside the Municipal Chambers accumulating inside the clock's mechanism.
The work would be carried out later this year, after work on the Municipal Chambers was completed, although exact dates had not yet been set, she said.
Mr Martin said he was confident it was safe to continue operating the clock in the short term, but cleaning was essential to avoid long-term damage.
The work would take up to one and a-half weeks, and should be carried out once refurbishment of the Municipal Chambers was completed, which was expected to be in August, he said.
