The parents of University of Otago student Sophie Elliott, who was murdered by her former tutor and boyfriend, did not call on the university to amend its ethical behaviour policy to state staff in intimate relationships with students should be made to resign, as published in the Otago Daily Times this week and in another article earlier this year.
In their submission to the university, Lesley and Gil Elliott accepted it could not prohibit intimate relationships between consenting adults but called on it to better manage such relationships by requiring both parties to attend separate supervision or counselling sessions monthly; nd said supervisors and counsellors should be required to report to the staff member's faculty dean every second month.
