City heritage funds offered

The Dunedin City Council is again investing $100,000 into the heritage and safety of the central city.

Applications for funding from the Central City Heritage Re-use Grants scheme would open on July 25, council urban design team leader Dr Glen Hazelton said.

It was the fifth year the scheme had run and the owner of any building built before 1940 in the central city could apply for funds to improve the aesthetic and heritage value of buildings or areas within the zone or contribute to earthquake strengthening.

The fund had previously contributed to revitalisation work taking place at the Empire Hotel in Princes St and the Gresham Hotel, at the intersection of Cumberland St and Queens Gardens.

"What we try to do with this fund is encourage owners [to invest in the heritage of their buildings] and try to get multiple projects going at the same time,'' Dr Hazelton said.

The fund was aimed at revitalisation of the Warehouse Precinct in its first year, Princes St in years two and three, and last year was opened to any project in the central city area.

"It's a first-in-first-served fund so those allocations can go quite quickly,'' he said.

"If people are thinking of applying we encourage them to get in early.

"I'd be surprised if there was money left by the end of August.''

The scheme funded about 8-10 projects a year, but there was no limit on any given project.

"There's an assessment process and we look at how much it contributes to the heritage of the character of the area,'' he said.

"Seismic upgrades are a big priority to us and so is visual amenity and things that are going to add to to revitalisation of the central city generally.''
