Dunedin will be exposed to an audience of millions when a popular Japanese television show highlights the sights, sounds and tastes of the Edinburgh of the south.

The crew of travel documentary show Sekai Fureai Machi Aruki - translated as "walk the town, meet the world'' - arrived in Dunedin last week to film an episode showcasing the city, which will air on Japanese television in July.

Production co-ordinator Cameron Bennett said the show was popular and would be seen by millions of Japanese viewers.

The show featured a "day in the life of Dunedin from dawn until dusk'' and was based on the "traveller's perspective''.

"It's very unique,'' Mr Bennett said.

"It's a unique filming style. There's no other programme like it in the world.''

The show was shot on a single Steadicam with the narrator out of view at all times.

It had run in Japan for the past decade and had "quite a good following''.

Mr Bennett said many people visited the locations featured in previous episodes because they had seen them on the show.

The show had previously featured Wellington, Auckland, Napier, Oamaru and Christchurch.

"The cities have to have an interesting story ... some history and something that sets them apart. Dunedin has the Scottish history so that's a nice starting point,'' Mr Bennett said.

The episode on Dunedin was due to screen alongside an episode on Sydney on July 5.
