Dunedin police are investigating four violent incidents which occurred in the city centre within a short time at the weekend.
An Auckland man was taken to Dunedin Hospital after he was punched in the head and kicked twice in the ribs about 1.15am on Sunday, Acting Senior Sergeant Paul McLaughlan said.
It appeared the visitor was involved in a verbal altercation on the corner of Moray Pl and George St before he was assaulted.
''He was arguing with another man, then suddenly he was set upon by others,'' Acting Snr Sgt McLaughlan said.
Police were trying to identify those involved and had viewed CCTV footage.
About 15 minutes after the incident, police arrested two Dunedin men for fighting in the Octagon.
The men, aged 20 and 26, each face charges of fighting. They were due to appear in the Dunedin District Court this week, Acting Snr Sgt McLaughlan said.
CCTV footage was used by police to apprehend the alleged offenders.
Another two incidents are being investigated.
