More than 50 tonnes of snow was dumped in North Dunedin yesterday, but it had nothing to do with climate change and everything to with fun.

Held at the Southlife Church in Union St, the youth-oriented event attracted hundreds of teenagers to the inaugural Snow Party, associate youth pastor Anna Boyd said.

More than 50 tonnes of free snow was transported by two truck and trailer units yesterday, from the Remarkables, Queenstown, to the church grounds, she said.

"We were a little bit worried about the sunny weather melting it, but it seems to have lasted well," she said, while ducking one of the many snowballs being thrown.

The aim of the event was to provide a fun, safe environment where year 9-13 pupils could enjoy themselves.

After a snow fight, snowboarders demonstrated their skill on a ramp and rail, erected for the occasion.

Alana Thom (14) said she enjoyed riding on the inner tubes down one of the snow-covered ramps.

The party, including a sermon by Auckland-based youth pastor Jordan Smith, had been well received and it could become an annual event, Mrs Boyd said.
