Christmas toy run ‘very successful’

The Balmacewen Lions Club is thrilled with another wheelie big donation from Dunedin’s kindest brigade of bikers.

More than 120 bikers took part in the 41st annual Bronz Otago Toy Run 2024 from Carey’s Bay to Andersons Bay, collecting donated soft toys and non-perishable food items in the annual Christmas appeal at the weekend.

Yesterday, Lions club member Brian Rodgers said it was amazing how many people turned up, both bikers and members of the Lions club.

"It's a very satisfying project that we do and it doesn't take a great deal of effort on our part. It's all over in a couple of days."

The donated toys were all boxed up and delivered to local organisations such as the Salvation Army, Anglican Family Care and Presbyterian Support Otago, Mr Rodgers said.

"What we do is we try and make a box up to suit a range of children."

Food parcels were also sent to local food banks and the club had noticed more of those being donated over the years.

"People probably see it as a more appropriate thing this time of the year.

"The food banks tend to get cleaned out pretty rapidly, so they need to restock it."

Members of the club spent yesterday afternoon delivering the parcels across the city after a morning of packing boxes.

Bronz Otago president John Russell said about 125 motorcycles took part in this year’s "very successful" toy run, which, after starting in the Carey’s Bay Historic Hotel, stopped at Forsyth Barr Stadium on the way to Bayfield Park in Andersons Bay.

This year, bikers supplied enough for "two utefuls", Mr Russell said.
