’Twas the week before Christmas, and all through the night, people were gathering, as Dunedin shone bright.
Wet and windy weather did not deter people from hitting the streets in search of the city’s best and brightest Christmas light displays this week.
By 9.30pm on Tuesday, like most nights for the past few weeks, cars were lined up outside 10 Forbury Rd, in South Dunedin.
Errol Head decided this time last year that he wanted to bring something new to the city’s Christmas light scene.
He came up with an intricate light display that flashes and changes colour in time with music playing through a speaker out the front.
The innovative display has become a firm favourite among the public this year.
‘‘It’s been quite busy most nights, it’s been really good,’’ Mr Head said.
‘‘I’m pretty happy, for the first year.’’
He was already planning some additions for Christmas 2020.
Meanwhile, checking out the impressive display at a house in Centennial Rd, in Fairfield, were Kayla White and children Indi (5) and Nekau (7), of Outram.
Both youngsters loved a display showing Santa on a motorbike in particular.
Ms White said despite the rain, it was a perfect opportunity for a bit of late-night light spotting.
Up at Rudd Rd, in Halfway Bush, Irene and Lloyd Cron’s Christmas display was shining bright.
For them, the joy it brought to the hundreds of visitors who turn up each night was worth the effort.
‘‘It’s just magic, if we can make somebody’s Christmas just that little bit happier,’’ Mr Cron said.
‘‘It gets bigger and bigger every year.’’
They sourced their impressive lights from New Zealand, Australia and the United States.
This year they were collecting donations to support guide dogs.
