Choppy start to pool season

The opening days of the summer season have not exactly gone swimmingly for the St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool.

Storms and high tides have forced the outdoor pool to close two out of the three days since it opened on Sunday.

Dunedin City Council aquatics manager and pool supervisor Heath Ellis said that was because of "a combo of the weather, but also the spring tides".

"This time of year we get really high tides and water comes over the sides of the walls, dropping the temperature of the pool.

"It brings over seaweed and sand and that sort of thing, requiring it to be cleaned out."

The team used nets and water vacuums to clean out the pool after its first closure and was ready to open by the next day.

The pool did open on Monday, but high tides forced it to be closed yet again as its temperature was "right below 20".

The pool reopened yesterday afternoon after Monday’s stormy weather.

Mr Ellis said "the wind itself [hadn’t] done any damage to the pool".
