Dunedin's own chocolate box cafe opened this week.

The Cadbury World Cafe is the first chocolate-themed cafe to operate from a company factory, Cadbury World manager Kylie Ruwhiu-Karawana says.

It was designed to take the magic of the chocolate factory and ''bring it into life'', she said.

Patrons could craft their own cupcakes and Cadbury products were incorporated into hot drinks, she said.

The decor of the cafe, built in what used to be a transport lane from the factory yard to Cumberland St, was ''sympathetic'' to its history.

''What we wanted to achieve is an industrial-looking cafe because it's an industrial site.''

Work on the cafe started last November. A final figure for the project was not yet available, but ''it was a significant investment'', Mrs Ruwhiu-Karawana said.

Mondelez New Zealand managing director Alistair de Raadt was confident about the investment.

More than 110,000 people came through Cadbury World on tours every year and the cafe provided another way to capture the public's imagination, he said.

''It's a great innovation to the business and ... to the city, considering the importance of tourism to the city,'' he said.

''It shows what you can do with some imagination and some empty space.''
