Chick names have landed with Doc

A competition to name an albatross chick has attracted more than 2000 suggestions, including Jabba the Fluff.

Department of Conservation spokeswoman Andrea Crawford said 2235 entries had been lodged in a competition to name the northern royal albatross chick, which hatched at Taiaroa Head on Otago Peninsula in January.

The competition closed yesterday.

Many of the entries were from children or people living outside New Zealand.

Some of the latest suggestions include Air Force 1, Highlander, Squeak, Prince or Princess Longwing and Chicklette. One child suggested the name Snowy.

"I would call this chick Snowy because when it is sleeping it looks like a pile of snow. Snow isn't seen everywhere just like royal albatross. Also, it must get very cold up on the heads where the albatross live,'' the entry said.

The Pukekura Co-management Trust would choose five names and put them out to public vote.

The winning name would be announced on a peninsula webcam on June 21.
