Students and seals are giving sightseeing Australian travel agents a taste for Dunedin.

Thirty-two agents from throughout Australia have been in the city as part of a Tourism New Zealand familiarisation tour.

They encountered nightlife, including resident tertiary students, in the Octagon on Saturday and yesterday witnessed the wildlife along Otago Peninsula.

''It's been really fun,'' Sydney agent Alex Lavan said.

Seals, albatrosses and Larnach Castle were highlights of the peninsula tour.

Dunedin's history and architecture would attract Australian travellers looking for an alternative to the ''typical'' New Zealand winter holiday of skiing and snowboarding, Ms Lavan said.

''If you had to name the top five New Zealand places that Australians knew about, Dunedin probably wouldn't be in there, because the bigger regions and cities are so heavily promoted. But it's perfect for someone who doesn't mind an adventure, or a driving holiday, and wants something a little more relaxed,'' she said.

The agents indulged in a haggis ceremony, and also tasted the ''pride of the South'' at Speight's Brewery last night.

Today they go to Christchurch.
