Walking away with the New Zealand Streetstock GP title is on the cards for Brighton's Paul Simon.
Simon is one of 70 competitors from around the country who will take part in the qualifying round of the New Zealand Streetstock GP at Beachlands Speedway on Friday. The final will be held on Saturday night.
Simon, who is the current 1NZ, held the GP title in 2010-11.
''I will be trying to win it again. Everyone that turns up is a potential tough competitor.
''Everyone has a chance. It comes down to luck on the night and making sure you survive out there,'' he said.
About 22 competitors from throughout the South Island, including Nelson, Cromwell, Christchurch and Invercargill, will compete in the South Island Super Saloon Championship tomorrow.
The super saloons will race in the Otago championship on Saturday, Beachlands promoter Mark Newall.
''It's going to be the biggest event that we have seen at our track for a long time.
''It will be two days of action packed racing that you will struggle to find better for a long time,'' he said.
Newall said the crowd will be in for a ''real treat''.
''The Super Saloons are purpose-built race cars putting out 600hp. They are unbelievable.
''They go over 120kmh on the track, sideways, steering toward a concrete wall,'' he said.
''It's the other end of the excitement scale.
''You've got 20 thundering V8s on the track at the same time."
