Charges to be laid following collision

A 55-year-old Balclutha man who caused a car crash in Dunedin when he ran a red light in a vehicle believed to be stolen will face charges, police say.

The crash occurred when a Kia Sportage SUV collided with a Toyota Caldina station wagon at the Cumberland St intersection with lower Stuart St in central Dunedin on Wednesday evening.

The man had to be restrained by up to six police officers during a tussle in the back of a police car after the incident.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said it was believed the car had been stolen from Kaka Point earlier that evening.

A police pursuit was about to begin when the accident occurred.

It had not been determined what charges the man would face but they would probably be laid early next week, he said.

The man had been involved in another crash, near Beaumont, the previous day, before he allegedly stole the Kia, Snr Sgt Brown said.

It was not clear if the same vehicle was involved or whether he would face charges over that incident.
