A battery charger has been identified as the cause of the blaze, Southern region fire investigator Mike Cahill, of Invercargill, said.

Mr Cahill conducted the investigation after firefighters from the Dunedin, Roslyn, Willowbank, and St Kilda brigades extinguished the fire at the house in Haddon Place.

Mr Cahill said the charger was used for motorcycle batteries.

Dunedin senior station officer Kerry McNamara said about 10% of the property had been damaged.

The sole occupant of the house was out at the time.

Firefighters were called to the house about 10.10am, and spent about 45 minutes extinguishing the fire.
