After years of "maybes", the Mornington Presbyterian Community Centre is set to open its doors to the public this weekend.
The Rev Geoffrey Skilton said the community centre had first been suggested 30 years ago and "after many years of maybes we are finally here - it is very exciting".
Located at 16 Maryhill Tce, the $2.1 million development has increased the size of the existing church eightfold, allowing a space for the community to use, he said.
"Churches have traditionally provided affordable places for community groups to partake in activities. It will also create a sense of togetherness for the community as a place to worship."
Several groups, including Age Concern, indoor bowls and various dance associations, had expressed interest in using the new community centre, Mr Skilton said.
"It shows there is a place for the church in the community."
The construction of the community centre, which began last March, was done by Calder Stewart Construction, after major funding was sourced from the congregation, the Presbyterian Synod of Otago Southland, the Community Trust of Otago and the Alexander McMillan Trust.
The public are invited to attend an open afternoon tomorrow between 2pm and 4pm, featuring Dunedin City Mayor Peter Chin, before its official opening at 10am on Sunday by the Rt Rev Dr Graham Redding, the elected leader of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand.
