Central Dunedin block reopens after gas leak

A central Dunedin block has reopened following a gas leak caused by a digger cutting through a pipe earlier today.

The works are part of an extensive refurbishment of George St and the affected area was the New Edinburgh Way block between Hanover and Frederick Streets.

The incident was reported at 9am today and police earlier said there would be "quite a smell" for a while as the pipe ran the full length of the block.

Both sides of the city's main street were evacuated and everyone asked to leave stores and other buildings.

However by 2pm, the cordon had been lifted, allowing pedestrians in the street and shops to reopen.

A firefighter at the scene said a contractor hit the gas pipe in the construction zone this morning and crews worked to trap the gas by spraying the leak with water.

Fire and Emergency NZ incident controller Rob Torrance said at lunchtime there was residual gas in basements and stormwater drains, and crews would be there for at least another hour to ensure the area was safe.

Mr Torrance said there was no danger to the public.

"Anyone who is concerned they were affected by the gas this morning should contact their GP or Healthline (0800 611 116). In an emergency, always call 111."

Appliances from Dunedin Central, Roslyn and Willowbank stations attended.

In a Facebook post at 1.45pm, the Dunedin City Council said the block had reopened to the public.

"We apologise to affected businesses, residents and the wider public for the disruption. Thanks everyone for your patience and understanding."

A Genesis Energy spokeswoman this afternoon said staff had repaired the gas main and it was now working to restore gas supply to affected addresses as quickly as possible.

She said gas supply had to be restored in sections for safety reasons.

So some addresses had their gas restored today, while others may have to wait one to two days.

‘‘We will meet with the council and external contractors with the aim of ensuring this type of incident does not occur again,’’ she said.
