Carload of drugs, money found, police say

A disqualified driver was caught with a carload of drugs and money on Thursday, Dunedin police say.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said the 41-year-old man was stopped by police at 9.35pm in Brockville Rd.

Police found the man was a disqualified driver.

After a warrantless search of the vehicle was conducted, officers found MDMA and $13,870 in cash inside the car, Snr Sgt Bond said.

The man was arrested and charged with possession of ecstasy and driving while disqualified.

Police seized the money and he will appear in court next week.

Another disqualified driver was caught in Dunedin the same evening.

Police saw a vehicle swerving erratically between lanes at 11.20pm and stopped it in Beau Lane.

The 42-year-old woman was spoken to by police and they discovered she was disqualified.

Her car was impounded and she underwent breath-testing procedures.

She recorded a breath-alcohol level of 323mcg.

Earlier in the evening, a man T-boned a car after being distracted by his cream bun.

The 69-year-old said he was eating his cream bun and did not notice the traffic lights in Cumberland and Hanover Sts change from green to red.

He drove through the intersection and crashed into a car containing a man and woman.

The woman was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing.

At 4.25pm that evening, a woman who had been driving almost non-stop from Tauranga fell asleep at the wheel and ploughed into a paddock.

The 20-year-old woman told police she had a short sleep while on the Picton ferry and had been driving with her two children since early Thursday morning.

When she reached Waitati Rd, she fell asleep and crashed.

No injuries were sustained by any of the car’s occupants.
