A range of vehicles were on show in Taieri yesterday at a fundraising event combining cars and cancer-fighting canines.

Rev 'n' Ride co-organiser Tracy Chambers said it was the second time the fundraising event had been held, and the first time it had supported K9 Medical Detection, a Dunedin charity training cancer-sniffing dogs.

However, she hoped the car show and cruise — last held in 2016 — would become an annual event.

Turnout was high at the A&P Showgrounds as motoring enthusiasts took advantage of the sunny day to inspect a wide range of vehicles, from custom choppers to American and Australian muscle cars.

Organisers were hesitant to set a fundraising goal, but hoped to raise as much as possible.

"They need money, and we love cars and vehicles," she said.

Co-organiser Janine Bolton, who lost her mother to bowel cancer in 2019, said K9 Medical Detection was carrying out vital cancer-fight work.

Dogs were trained to sniff out the disease, a method that was both highly accurate and non-invasive, she said

So far they could detect bowel cancer and prostate cancer, and K9 Medical Detection were working at training dogs to sniff out ovarian cancer too.

The charity aimed to upgrade its facilities but had no government funding, so public fundraising efforts were important.

Dunedin’s Michael Sutton, who attended the event with his son, Jack (6), said the cause was very worthwhile.

As an intensive care nurse, he saw the effects of cancer every day and was pleased to support a fundraiser aimed at fighting the disease.

It was also a pleasant way to spend the day.

"We just wanted to come out and see all the amazing cars and enjoy the sun," he said.
