A high-speed police pursuit in Dunedin tonight ended in a car crash and an arrest.

In a statement, a police spokeswoman said police engaged in a pursuit about 7pm after a driver failed to stop.

The 2km pursuit on the Southern Motorway started near Caversham and ended 20m north of the Abbotsford off ramp, where the speeding car crashed.

St John spokesman Ian Henderson said a person with moderate injuries was taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital's emergency department.

The police spokeswoman said the person taken to hospital was arrested.

A southbound lane on the motorway was closed tonight as the Serious Crash Unit investigated.

The incident was referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority, she said.

Police declined to comment further on the crash as it was under investigation.

About 50 people watched the crash scene from the Green Island foot bridge.
