A car was ransacked in central Dunedin and although nothing was taken, a helpful calling card was left behind - a mobile phone.
``The person who broke into it has left a phone in the vehicle,'' Acting Senior Sergeant Trevor Thomson, of Dunedin, said.
``It's definitely a good line of inquiry,'' he said.
Police could not rule out that the phone had been stolen elsewhere, but officers were following a positive line of investigation.
The incident took place in Scotland St between 9pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday.
Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800 555-111.
