Items at a police auction yesterday evening ranged from the peculiar to the prosaic, as recliner chairs sat next to assorted vintage chemistry bottles and an old telephone box leaned perilously close to a self-inflating mattress.
Dunedin Sale Rooms auctioneer Kerryn Woods warned buyers: "If it doesn't go tomorrow, don't come back and complain about it", but the auction of unclaimed goods proved popular with punters.
Auction staff said the 55 bicycles among the 442 items for sale were in demand, and there were bargains to be had among the jewellery for buyers who knew what they were looking at.
One bicycle went for $1, but Mr Woods had to call for "somebody to buy it for $1 for parts?" before the hammer came down.
Proceeds from the auction go to the Consolidated Fund.
