It was announced yesterday the 71-year-old Grammy Award-winning artist — who has sold more than 300 million albums worldwide — will perform at Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium on Tuesday, February 4, 2020.
The concert will form part of the three-show New Zealand leg of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which also includes performances in Hawke’s Bay and Auckland.
It will be a step back in time for John, who became the first artist to perform at Dunedin’s then-new roofed stadium soon after it opened in 2011.
He drew a crowd of 35,500 fans to the venue then, and Dunedin Venues chief executive Terry Davies said another capacity crowd was expected when he returned next year.
His farewell tour, when began last year, is scheduled to include more than 300 shows across five continents over three years.
He will perform a selection of his greatest hits, songs such as Tiny Dancer, Rocket Man and I’m Still Standing. He will also offer a glimpse into his life and the personal meaning behind his songs through never-before-seen images and videos throughout the show.
He will be joined by longstanding band members Nigel Olsson, Davey Johnstone, Ray Cooper, Matt Bissonette, John Mahon and Kim Bullard.
Tickets go on sale at 9am on February 14, 2019.
