Support for Cyclone Gabrielle victims has come straight from the hearts of Dunedin’s budding artists — although they are a lot younger than one might presume.

St Joseph’s Cathedral School hosted an art auction at Te Pūkenga Otago Polytechnic on Thursday night, to raise funds for victims of the devastating cyclone that hit North Island residents earlier in the year.

One hundred and fifty-five pupils, aged 5 to 11, raised a total of $2150 by producing 300 individual artworks, raking in a commission of $5 a pop.

The auction also featured 12 high-profile works from a few of Dunedin’s premier artists.

Many children flaunted their inner artist on auction night.

One boy dressed up in a full suit, while a girl sported a beret for the occasion.

Principal Jo Stanley said the pupils had been learning about creativity this term.

When their student council proposed the auction, the children were itching at the chance for their art to have an effect beyond the classroom.

"They were quite upset ... seeing it on the news and the devastation on people’s houses," Mrs Stanley said.

"If it was their own classrooms and playground equipment that was destroyed — they just wanted to reach out to other people."

Mrs Stanley said they were a passionate group and wanted to do something to help up north.

She expected the total to reach $2500 once a few more parents had a chance to peruse the work.

"The kids are really proud of their efforts."
