Lord of the Degrees, described as "an epic pursuit in balance of grades and beer pong", will be directed by stage directors University of Otago law and Maori student Ben McCook-Weir (20) and music and theatre student Issac Martyn (22), and the video director is theatre and English student Chris Cook (21).
"It's all very focused on the things we are going through and experiencing," Mr McCook-Weir said.
The show was "all about the ring" but instead of turning its wearer invisible, the magical ring in the capping show production gave people abilities that were more relevant to students, to help them get through their year.
The show is set in modern-day New Zealand and will include regular capping show features the sextet and the sexytet, as well as the Selwyn Ballet and some, though not all, of the classic LOTR characters. There was an all-new cast from different faculties in the university.
"We are well into it. We've been rehearsing for probably five weeks and we had four weeks of writing.
"The whole thing is one big ensemble effort; it's a huge amount of work from everyone pulling it together."
The show opens on May 15 and is being held on eight nights in the Teacher's College Auditorium. Tickets are available via Cosmic Ticketing.
