In a world first, the University of Otago has achieved a 5+ Star rating in the revamped Quacquarelli Symonds QS Stars assessment.
QS Stars was launched in 2009 and assesses more than 700 institutions across more than 70 countries.
QS frameworks head Florence Webb said the organisation rated institutions out of a possible five stars, based on the areas that were most important to students, such as facilities, teaching and employability.
Its methodology was updated earlier this year and the new criteria place an increased emphasis on each institution’s sustainability performance.
Under the new criteria, Otago was awarded the maximum possible 5+ Stars overall, as well as five stars in nine categories: teaching; facilities; subject ranking; employability; good governance; environmental impact; diversity, equity and inclusion; research; and global engagement.
University of Otago international director Jason Cushen was thrilled with the results.
"As New Zealand’s first university, the University of Otago has a global reputation for research and teaching excellence.
"QS Stars demonstrates to the world other aspects of the unique Otago experience that are important to students, such as our world-class facilities, exceptional graduate employability and high levels of student support," Mr Cushen said.
Vice-chancellor Grant Robertson said it was an outstanding achievement that further proved Otago was a world-leading university.
"To achieve 5+ Stars in this assessment is no easy feat and shows our commitment to providing the very best for our tauira [students].
"I’m incredibly proud of the kaimahi [staff] we have at Otago."
Ms Webb said Otago’s achievement of the prestigious 5+ Star rating, the highest possible accolade, highlighted its outstanding performance across key higher education metrics, and was recognition of its commitment to excellence, both locally and overseas.
