Otago Uni top again for academic performance

Based on key government indicators, the University of Otago has again been named New Zealand’s best university for student academic performance.

The Tertiary Education Commission’s (TEC) 2023 educational performance indicators examined course and qualification completion rates, retention rates and progression to higher levels of study for institutions across the tertiary sector.

In its report, released earlier this month, Otago ranked first among New Zealand’s eight universities for student qualification completion, first-year retention and progression, and second for course completion.

It also ranked first-equal for Pacific student progression, second for Māori and Pacific student qualification completion, Māori and Pacific student retention and Māori student course completion, and third for Pacific student course completion.

Otago’s results in the latest TEC performance measures showed its course completion rate was 90%; its first-year retention rate (from 2022-23) was 82%; its qualification completion rate was 74%; and its student progression from sub-degree study was 97%.

Deputy vice-chancellor (academic) Prof Stuart Brock said the latest results added to Otago’s strong performance over the past few years, having topped all four measures last year and in 2019, and three out of four in 2021 and 2020.

He was pleased Otago continued to lead the way in student performance.

"It is a testament to students’ hard work and the dedication of our teaching and support staff," he said.
