Green is the new black, at least when it comes to the graduation gown of international student Tiara Das.

The 21-year-old University of Otago student from India’s Punjab has helped to design a gown with Maori fashion designer Kiri Nathan reflecting her experience as an international student.

"It felt really glamorous," Miss Das said of her experience trying the garment on for the first time.

She was one of a group of international students who all had unique gowns made as part of an Education New Zealand campaign.

"The reflection of my four years in New Zealand was really humbling."

Green was her colour of choice for both the gown and the embroidery.

"The campus is green, the Indian flag’s green, my dad’s favourite colour is green. The colour green has always followed me around."

The stepped poutama design represented her journey and personal growth during her time in New Zealand.

She intended to graduate at the end of the year with a bachelor of science in neuroscience and psychology, and was unsure if the university would allow her to wear the gown for the ceremony.

However she would love wearing it regardless of the occasion, she said.

She was passionate about taking part in the project as it was a chance to advocate for international students.

"I do believe that we as a group contribute a lot to the New Zealand community."

"It was really important for me to share my story, because if I can do it anyone else can do it."
