University of Otago graduation ceremonies took place on Saturday.
Students Finn Ryder and Louise Bennett-Jones both graduated with a PhD in marine science.
"We pretty much did our whole PhDs together," Dr Ryder said.
He felt it was "a relief" to be graduating.
Dr Bennett-Jones said graduating felt "kind of surreal".

The pair met during their studies as they had the same supervisor during the course.
"We had similar topics so we worked together and helped each other out with our field work."
Dr Ryder planned to stay in Dunedin until the end of the year.
As for Dr Bennett-Jones, she had already left the city and moved to Northland.
"I miss everything about Dunedin, even the weather — I would even still say that on a day like this.

She praised the marine science department at the university and said the course was "really awesome".
"I liked all the time we got to spend in the water doing field work with some really amazing people and some really amazing places."
The pair both had planned to celebrate over dinner and drinks on Saturday.
About 700 people graduated from the university at two ceremonies at the weekend.
More than 100 people graduated in absentia.
