Work on the three-level heritage consumer and applied sciences building is under way.

University of Otago campus development director Tanya Syddall said originally it was planned the building would be strengthened and upgraded as part of a $44 million food science redevelopment project.

"This project also included a laboratory redevelopment in the Gregory Building, a new food hall and link building, all of which have since been put on hold due to affordability," Ms Syddall said.

In March, the university began early seismic strengthening work on the consumer and applied sciences building.

Ms Syddall said the university council had recently approved the building’s fit-out, but the cost was commercially sensitive.

The work is due to be completed by the end of next year.
