Bragging rights for Studholme over Arana

Bragging rights were up for grabs in an unsanctioned tug o’ war between rival halls at University of Otago’s sports day yesterday.

After the Uniflats team won the official intercollege tug o’ war competition, Studholme and Arana College settled their rivalry.

Josiah Lenati, 18, of Studholme College, fronted his team’s victorious effort to claim bragging rights over Arana.

Studholme resident Maddie Kay, 17, of Hamilton, said Arana was the one hall she could not stand losing to because they were right across the street from them.

"They think they’re better then us because they won something last year."

Arana resident Leila Daniels, 18, of Auckland, said she was happy to let the loss go.

"We’ll take a podium spot. We’re humble."

She said Arana had Studholme’s dragon mascot hanging on their wall so they still had something to brag about.

Unipol head co-ordinator of the the intercollege competition Mica Goldsmith-Lonie said sports day was an opportunity for students to get to know each other.

Other events at the sports day included a relay, touch, netball, volleyball and backyard cricket.
