Survey equipment attached to a street light on Cumberland St will be used for a business case for safety improvements around State Highway 1.

The camera is being used by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi to gather data on pedestrian traffic on footpaths along SH1.

An NZTA spokeswoman said the data was being gathered this week and would be used to build a business case for a safety improvements along the highway, as foot-traffic in the area is expected to increase when the new Dunedin hospital is operational.
