Packed with flavour and nutrition and perfect for gardeners with limited space, microgreens are the latest trend in salad greens.

Author and floral designer and stylist Fionna Hill, of Auckland, who is in Dunedin this week for the Dunedin Rhododendron Festival, spoke at the Dunedin Club yesterday on how to grow the tiny plants and the best way to eat them.

Microgreens resemble sprouts and are thin, delicate plants which are grown in intense crops in shallow soil.

Ms Hill has written a book about the plants - How to Grow Microgreens - and hopes they will become more popular here as they had in the United States.

Living in an apartment, she had limited space for a garden, but grew masses of microgreens in a range of containers on her balcony.

She enjoyed them because they were compact, fast growing, nutritious, and had "quite intense flavours".

Microgreens were promoted as garnishes, and traditionally eaten raw.

However, the "loveliest thing you can do is put them in a salad", Ms Hill said.

She had also created recipes in which the tiny green treats were cooked.
