A Dunedin cafe is taking a ‘‘proactive, rather than reactive’’ approach to staff and customer safety amidst Covid-19.

Marbecks Foodstore will stop the use of reusable cups, reduce the number of tables in the cafe and sanitise tables between every seating among other measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Marbecks manager Jayrelle Clark said she had met the owner of Marbecks and Daily Dose yesterday and it was decided this was the best course of action to take.

‘‘We came up with a collective agreement about how we can minimise the risk for customers and staff.’’

Other measures included removing self-serve water options, self-select cutlery, napkins, salt and pepper and sugars from tables, all of which would be delivered instead by runners.

‘‘We will be increasing the amount our staff wash their hands.

‘‘It’s about making our staff and our customers feel good about the Marbecks.’’

Miss Clark said it would not affect the customer’s experience, but was safest for everyone amidst the risk of the virus.

‘‘This is doing something constructive, not just negative.

‘‘We want to keep people safe and prevent the spread.’’

Miss Clark had noticed a reduced number of patrons at the cafe yesterday.

‘‘We do hope people keep coming here, and know we’re doing everything we can.’’
