Accommodation has been filling up in Dunedin as Christchurch people seek respite from the earthquake.
Comfort Inn Alcala owner Gary Perreau said this time of year was usually busy for hotels and motels with tourist numbers in the city increasing, but Tuesday's quake resulted in further pressure on the city's beds.
Five of his units had filled yesterday with business people deciding to operate from Dunedin offices, and families needing a break.
Tourist Court Cottages owner John Owens was offering special packages for families from Christchurch - children stayed free with only adults having to pay, "so they can get away".
Garden Motel co-owner Adrienne Roy said a few people had sought accommodation, and while others extended their stays, some were forced to cancel bookings.
Dunedin Holiday Park manager Daniel Grubb said about 200 Christchurch people had filled the park at the weekend, most of them just looking for some respite.
Many others in the park had decided to stay on to avoid the ravaged city, but now accommodation was freeing up, he said.
Leith Valley Touring Park manager Richard Renai said they had had about 20 inquiries about accommodation, but because the park was already full, people had been turned away.
