There are few things greater than catching a blast from the past, which is why one group of Dunedin bus enthusiasts are bringing retro back to the metro.

Members of the Otago Heritage Bus Society spent their Easter Sunday applying new coats of paint to a pair of old Leyland Leopard buses which used to run routes on the streets of Dunedin.

Mechanic Anthony Holliday said it took "hours and hours" of work to restore each bus to working order.

One of the buses, a 1976 model, was found on a farm in Methven.

Despite being exposed to the elements, the vehicle was still in decent condition.

However, the motor was in pieces and required quite a bit of mechanical work.

Although it would take time, older engines were more simple than modern ones, the relevant issue being sourcing parts, and fortunately the group had secured a reliable supplier in Sydney.

The other bus was a 1981 model which was used by Otago Road Services until its closure recently.

The group funded the repairs by hiring out the buses for events, such as weddings, he said.

It usually ran the Suburban Rumbler bus service over Easter weekend, but the event was cancelled this year.
