Brothers behind revival of boat shed

Life is but a dream for two Brighton brothers, now that they own the township’s historic boat shed.

The facility has long been out of action, and was recently bought by Jeff and Phillip Wilson, with support from their Brighton neighbours.

They hope people will be able to merrily row boats on Otokia Creek again as early as next month.

During the day, Jeff (33) is a chartered accountant and business adviser, while Phillip (29) has very useful skills as a qualified boat builder.

Jeff said the business was still to receive resource consent, but the duo planned to spend the next six weeks repairing the boat shed and its boats, ready to open at weekends from the end of November.

"We’ve got a massive amount of work to do.

"We’ve purchased 30 row boats, two water bikes, eight pedal bikes, 20 kayaks and some canoes.

"All the boats need a lot of work and Phillip’s going to restore them."

Mr Wilson said 12 Brighton residents were involved in the venture.

"We all live on the same block in Brighton. We have a beer every Wednesday and it was there that we came up with the idea.

"We thought it would be so cool to see the boat hire reopened. It’s been around since the 1800s," he said.

Mr Wilson’s wife Monica is a clothing designer and it was hoped the store would eventually sell a range of her clothing, alongside surfboard hire and sales.

He said the Otokia Creek and Marsh Habitat Trust had also been supportive of the venture, and the business planned to give a portion of its proceeds to the trust to help with its ongoing work protecting the creek’s water quality and wildlife.
