Brighton recycling extended

Residents of the Big Stone and Taieri Mouth Rd area will have kerbside recycling from July 1.

The Dunedin City Council infrastructure services committee approved the extension of the Brighton kerbside collection service at its meeting on Monday, afterrequests from residents of the area.

About 60 ratepayers in Highland Rd, Brighton Rd to Big Stone Rd and Taieri Mouth Rd as far as rapid response number 124 were recently consulted by council staff, who received responses from about half of the residents.

About threequarters of respondents supported the proposal, a report to the committee said.

Council solid waste manager Ian Featherston said with truck collection routes settled in and less recycling than expected, new routes close to existing routes were being explored.

The extra costs of expanding the service would be covered by rates from those properties.

Residents will receive a 240-litre wheelie bin for plastics, paper and metal cans and a blue plastic bin for glass bottles and jars and be charged an extra $64 a year on their rates for the weekly service, from July 1.
