Worksafe has been notified after a 9-year-old boy received a "serious cut'' to the head when a sign fell on him at Dunedin's Edgar Centre.
Edgar Centre general manager Blair Crawford said the boy was watching a miniball game last Sunday, when a balsawood court number sign fell about 4m on to his head.
He received a "serious cut'' to his head and was taken to Dunedin Hospital by St John ambulance, Mr Crawford said.
The sign presumably had been loosened by impacts from balls over time "and something's triggered it on the day'', he said.
It was "just very unfortunate that he happened to be standing below it''.
"I suppose every accident is now preventable to a degree, so we are obviously really disappointed to have a person getting injured in the centre.''
The boy was back at home with his family now.
As a precaution, the centre had removed other number signs, all of which were securely fastened.
A Worksafe spokeswoman said it had been notified of the incident and was making some follow-up inquiries.
