Vigilant members of the public helped police apprehend a grossly intoxicated driver on Saturday afternoon.
Dunedin Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said police received reports about a man driving erratically, and he was pulled over by a patrol car at the north end of George St at 2.30pm.
The man recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 1619mcg per litre of breath.
The legal limit is 400mcg.
"It is a huge result," Snr Sgt Brown said.
The 28-year-old Dunedin man will appear in the Dunedin District Court later this week.
Two other Dunedin motorists also returned excess breath-alcohol readings on Saturday.
A 27-year-old man has been charged with drink-driving after he recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 603mcg following a routine traffic stop on Cumberland St at 10.45am.
A 19-year-old who was stopped on Castle St at 8am recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 207mcg.
The legal limit for those under 20 is 150mcg per litre of breath.
• A 48-year-old Dunedin man will appear in the Dunedin District Court on a burglary charge after a box of beer was allegedly taken from a Albany St property.
Snr Sgt Brown said police were alerted to the incident by Campus Watch staff, who saw the man enter the property.
