It is a mystery waiting to be written.

A surprisingly large and semi-consumed cucumber, partially wrapped in plastic seal, is one of the stranger items left behind at the University Book Shop, an outlet better known for selling literature than vegetables.

Nobody knows how it got there or why, but now staff want to return it to its owner.

Children's book specialist Charlotte McKay said the shop often had ''lots of interesting things'' left behind, ranging from soft toys to muddy sports gear.

But the cucumber was a first.

Ms McKay said she would hate to think somebody would be deprived of such a fine cucumber, and posted its picture on the shop's social media page to help it find its way home.

The post received plenty of comments, but no apparent clues as to its owner.
