An educational children's colouring book is the latest Dunedin publication in a series of resources about New Zealand's coastal marine environment.

The Rocky Shore - Who Eats Who was officially launched before the school holidays and has been available for free at the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre and Aquarium at Portobello.

It was developed by marine centre staff in conjunction with the University of Otago and comprises images drawn by Corlis Schneider, who completed an internship at the aquarium as part of her scientific illustration studies at the California State University, Monterey Bay.

Centre manager Tessa Mills said the illustration student was tasked with designing and illustrating a book with images of local marine creatures and habitats.

The rocky shore theme was expanded through informative text about feeding behaviours of different creatures including filter feeders, scavengers and predators.

The 20-page colouring book features a key to the creatures illustrated as well as food diagrams. It is available for schools and education groups and can be downloaded through the marine centre's website.

Also published as part of the centre's rocky shore series are northern and southern rocky shore guides and a rocky shore activities book.
