Replacement options for the bridge, which was destroyed by floodwaters in July last year, were discussed during a public-excluded part of the Strath Taieri Community Board meeting on Thursday.
Council transport group manager Richard Saunders said he was unable to provide exact details about the options discussed, but the replacement bridge would be the most costly item in the council’s $20 million flood repair package.
A number of options had been developed, but no planning or design work had been done, Mr Saunders said.
"We’ll be trying to get something together for councillors to look at by the middle of the year and that will allow us to progress with high-level design and planning work."
Discussion was needed with the NZ Transport Agency, about how much of the work would be funded by the agency, he said.
The council understood the bridge’s importance to the Strath Taieri community and its historical value.
Strath Taieri Community Board chairman Barry Williams would not comment on the content of the meeting but said he and the community were happy with how the situation was being handled.
